Preparations are being made for our next exhibition export: bulgaria 5, contemporary geometric abstraction from bulgaria, which will open on May 31st 2024. An exchange with nonsofia.

The exhibition, presenting a selection of works by nine Bulgarian artists, born between 1933 and 1980, gives the audience an opportunity to explore a completely new terra incognita. When it comes to geometric art, Bulgaria is one of the few European countries without an established tradition in this aesthetic field. Since 2010, however, nonsofia has been creating social awareness of it by organising symposia, exhibitions, open lectures, film screenings and workshops for children. Through these various activities, the association has gradually succeeded in consolidating a local art community and bringing Bulgaria onto the world map of geometric abstraction.

The exhibition is financially supported by the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria and includes works made over the past thirty years by the following artists: Boyan Chakarov, georgi dimitrov, Georgi Georgiev, Georgi Yanakiev, Ivan Shumanov, Kamen Kalev, Maria Chakarova, Petar Dochev and Viktor Vlaesku.

EST presents Heirloom, a weekend solo exhibition by Theo Rooden with his brilliant geo weavings. Visiting hours: Friday 10th of November from  2-8 pm and on Sunday 12 November between 11 am and 5 pm!

Visual artist Theo Rooden (The Netherlands, 1969) is a weaver. He loves to experiment with techniques and geometric abstract compositions. In many of his works he challanges the flatness of the fabric with optical effects. With his self imposed rules he searches for interesting rhythms and patterns. Possibilities and constraints of the loom and yarn are a source of inspiration. Rooden prefers to make series of works to explore in detail the consequences of algorithms and its variants. When translating a design into a woven fabric, the self-imposed rules need to be bent, opening a space for unexpected and interesting results. Intuition regarding colours and composition shapes final choices
